The story of the Soundforest

Aerial view of a woman walking along a forest road.

The scent of wild raspberries wafts seductively from the forest, the sun's rays peeking through the birch trees. The wind plays in the tops of the pine trees, while the beard mossed spruces protect the emerald green ferns growing on their roots. The forest is flooded with scents, messages, tones and emotions.

The Soundforest is a lovely small private forest in Keminmaa. The forest has a variety of different terrain, trees of different ages and a wealth of flora, including mosses, fungi, polypores and various flowering plants. There is a small swamp, a wet and dry canopy forest and a pond in early summer, a favourite place for frogs, formed by spring meltwater. The area around the pond is rich in delicate flora such as tongues, wood stems, wild rowan berries, ferns and lichens. Especially in summer, the forest is full of a variety of dizzying scents, as the sun-warmed pines, lilies or wild rosemaries charm you with their fragrances. At the rear, the forest rises on the Kaljupää-Helkkunen hill, slow-growing rocky area. Its highest point is about 70 m, from where you can see as far as the neighbouring municipality.

Some firewood is taken from the forest for own use. Otherwise, the forest is little managed and its biodiversity is preserved. The protected tree species in the forest are rowan, aspen, old spruces and pines. Trees and stumps felled by the wind age on the ground at their own pace, providing food for other plants and organisms. The oldest large pine trees on the hill are estimated to be several hundred years old.

In the forest you will find a laavu, a campfire site, a covered dining table, a forest terrace, a heated yurt and two small campfire sites. You can also access the forest via alongside running Kivalo outdoor trail. The parking area for the trail that connects to the hiking trail is a few hundred metres from the junction of our yard  Kivalontie 1698 94500 Keminmaa.
